We must create an equation and cross-multiply to solve for c%:
[200][/(1 - c)] = [300][/(1 + c)]
200(1 + c) = (300)(1 - c)
200 + 200c = 300 - 300c
500c = 100
x = 1/5 = 0.20
To convert 0.20 into a percentage, multiply by 100:
c% = 0.20(100) = 20%
To check your answer:
20% loss:
x(0.8) = 200
x = 250
20% profit:
x(1.2) = 300
x = 250
