I still don't get it. Why can't it be that even though the committee dismissed an individual, the taint caused by the scandal continued to remain?

While the ethics committee ultimately ________ the executive, the taint of scandal followed her long after the investigation into her private business dealings had concluded.

Even though the executive was exculpated the damage has been done LONG after the investigation.

The only words alike in meaning are D and F
