Although it may seem obvious which quantity is greater, we can be 100% certain by using matching operations (see the video lesson below )
Given:
Quantity A: 5p
Quantity B: 9p
Let's get the variables on one side by subtracting 5p from both quantities:
Quantity A: 0
Quantity B: 4p
We can even divide both quantities by 4 to get:
Quantity A: 0
Quantity B: p
Since we're told p < 0, we can conclude that Quantity A is greater.
Answer: A
