Given that A works for 10 hours and B works for 8 hours for a job they are paid $D.
Assuming D is equal to $180, both should have been paid $90 each if they did equal amount of work. But since A worked more, B needs to give some part of their wage to A.
Hourly wage = $180/18 = $10 per hour.
Now, according to the amount of work they did, A should be paid $100 and B should be paid $80. Hence, B should give $10 from his pay to A to balance out the initial advance. This $10 is equal to y as per the question.
Quantity A = 9y (Initial amount received by A which is $90)
Quantity B = 6y (6 * 10 = $60)
Clearly, A is greater.

I solved this algebraically because it would have given me the fastest answer in terms of y (what the Q asked for).
So, both were given D dollars.
Hourly wage for A = D/10
Hourly wage for B = D/8
Now, D/8 - y = D/10
or D = 40y = Qty A
Qty A > Qty B.
