Since,there are 51 trucks available

and the automotive dealer sells only cars and trucks, and the ratio of cars to trucks on the lot is 1 : 3

no. of cars available = 17 ( 1: 3 or 17 : 51 and so on....)

We can solve this question using equivalent ratios

We'll set up the ratios in the form: # of cars/# of trucks

Let x = the number of cars the dealer has for sale

So we can write: x/51 = 1/3
Cross multiply: (3)(x) = (51)(1)
Simplify: 3x = 51
Solve: x = 51/3 = 17

Answer: A
