A commonly accepted definition of integrity in the modern world is the presence or appreciation of moral principle and character, uprightness and honesty. However, there is actually a lot more to integrity than just these qualities. If one thinks about it deeply, integrity can also be defined as an ideal or a goal to strive for, and something that requires constant discipline to practice in one's day to day life.

It is interesting to note that the word integrity itself is actually a martial word with its origins in an ancient Roman Army tradition. During the time of the twelve Caesars, it was a normal practice for the Roman Army to conduct morning inspections. As the inspecting officer would come in front of each legionnaire, the soldier would strike the armor breastplate that covered his heart with his right fist. The idea was that the armor had to be strongest in this area so as to protect the soldier's heart from swords and arrows. As the soldier struck his armor, he would simultaneously shout "Integritas", which in Latin means material wholeness, completeness, and entirety. The inspecting officer would listen closely for this verbal affirmation and also for the sound that well-kept armor would give off. Satisfied that the armor was sound and that the soldier beneath it was protected and ready for battle, the officer would then move on to the next man.
