Converting the above problem into an equation,
\(8x + 10y = 74\)
where x is the number of vases containing 8 flowers and y is the number of vases containing 10 flowers.
Also, there are 8 vases in total.
Therefore, \(x + y = 8\)
Solving the two equations simultaneously,
\(x = 3, y = 5\)
Thus, number of vases containing 10 flowers = 5
\(8x + 10y = 74\)
where x is the number of vases containing 8 flowers and y is the number of vases containing 10 flowers.
Also, there are 8 vases in total.
Therefore, \(x + y = 8\)
Solving the two equations simultaneously,
\(x = 3, y = 5\)
Thus, number of vases containing 10 flowers = 5

Let x = the NUMBER of vases containing 8 flowers
Let y = the NUMBER of vases containing 10 flowers
A flower shop has 8 vases on a shelf ...
We can write: x + y = 8
...containing a total of 74 flowers
We can write: 8x + 10y = 74
Simplify the equation by dividing both sides by 2 to get: 4x + 5y = 39
We now have the following system of equations:
x + y = 8
4x + 5y = 37
From here, we can take the top equation and multiply both sides by 4 to get:
4x + 4y = 32
4x + 5y = 37
Now subtract the bottom equation from the top equation to get: -y = -5 , which means y = 5
Answer: 5
