If x<4 and y<4, the median is 4.
If x>7, y>7 the median is is 7.
These are the two extremes for the median of this set. Thus the range of values is 7-4 = 3.

Ok we do not know the values for x and y. Therefore, we can say:
4 4 x 7 y. Median is X
4 4 y 7 x. Median is y
x y 4 4 7. Median is 4
4 4 7 x y. Median is 7
The answer is E since we do not know the values of x and y.
We cannot assume that x and y are higher or lesser than other values.
