Let x = time travelled by air, y = time travelled by train. Given that the total time travelled was 8 hours, x+y = 8.
If he travelled only by air, his total time travelled would've been 8-4 = 4. Let p = the speed in mph of the airplane.
4 * p = 720
p = 180
Since he saves 4 hours going only by air, which is 4/5 of the time he was in train,
4 = 4/5y
y = 5
Since x + y = 8, x = 3. Using the distance rate formula:
Distanced travelled by air = 3 * 180 = 540 <-- This is option B.
Distanced travelled by train = 720 - 540 = 180
540 / 180 = 3 <-- This is option C.
