Re: A slot machine in a Las Vegas casino has an average profit o [#permalink]

Lets break the problem into 2 parts.

1st part: Calculate profit of 5 days and 3 shifts
Given profit of 1 shift = 600
so for 3 shifts and 5 days: 600 * 3 * 5 = 9000

2nd part: Calculate profit of 2 days of weekend and 3 shifts
Given profit of 1 shift = 25% greater than usual days (600) = 125% * 600 or 1.25 (600)
so for 3 shifts and 2 days: 600 * 1.25 * 3 * 2 = 4500

Total Profit = 9000 + 4500 = 13500 option C

Profit from Sunday to Thursday
= 600*3*5 (3 sifts of 8hrs each in 24hrs and 5 days from sunday to thursday)
= 15*600 = $9000

Profit from Friday and Saturday
Shift profit = 25% greater than the shfit profit from Sunday to thursday = 600 + 600 *25% = 600 *(1 + 0.25 ) = 600*1.25 = 750
Total profit in Friday and Sat = 750 * 3 * 2 = 750 * 6 = $4500

Total profit for the week = $9000 + $4500 = $13,500
So, answer will be C
Hope it helps!

thank you! I was thinking on this about 10 minutes. I am happy that you solved it!

Re: A slot machine in a Las Vegas casino has an average profit o [#permalink]
The trickiest part for me was the wording. Make sure you guys read the portion that says "for every hour of every day". This means that in one day a machine has 3 shifts, not just one shift. On a TR-F day, a machine will have three 8 hour shifts so that means it'll make 600 dollars every shift (600)(3 shifts)= $1800. In the span of the 5 days (Thursday-Friday) it has made a profit of 9000. On Saturdays and sundays, it makes on average, 25% greater profits than the standard Tf-F shifts. This means that in one shift it'll make 600*1.25= 750 profit. Since 1 day has 3 of these shifts it is 750*3 which equals 2250. Add both days together and you get 4500 on those particular days. add them all up to tally the total average profit and you get 13,500. Cheers!
