Admissionado Quick Q & A: How much do test scores matter?

Quick Question: How sufficient is a score of 318 in GRE and 104 in TOEFL to get into a university like Columbia? How much do my test scores affect my application even if I have an exceptional SOP and strong recommendations, with an average GPA though?
Quick Answer: It’s hard to say for sure without knowing which program you plan to apply to at Columbia. Generally speaking, you want to hit and ideally exceed the average test scores for the program you plan to apply to. There is definitely more to your application than just test scores or undergrad GPA though. You have “checked the box” if you hit their averages but your essays and recommendations are still critical and hitting their average stats is by no means a guarantee of admission. At the same time, if you are below their averages you can still compensate with some very strong essays and LORs. And of course if you have exceeded the averages even better! Although, it’s still not a guarantee of admission. They want to also see strong, relevant work experience as well as strong essays & LORs.
