Hi,

I'm British and therefore have grown up spelling words in British English: colour, palour, plagarise etc. Should I assume I'm going to have to use American English in the essays or risk being penalised? And if so are there any obvious differences between the two that are worth noting aside from the fact we tend to add "u"s to words and use "s" instead of "z" for verbs?

I believe that your essay will not be affected by spelling errors as long as any spelling mistakes do not interfere with the readability of the text.

That said, as a Canadian (who uses British English), I think it's safer to just use American English spelling when writing your essay.
