As prices come down and the technology continues to improve, people simply buy the thing

this initial part of the sentence already suggests us that something that is a normal behavior, on a regular basis and constant.

---- which, it turns out, has fulfilled neither the utopian nor (i) ___ scenarios ascribed to it

A and C basically means the same of utopian which is a perfect society. We do need something in net contrast to this word, therefore B is the first blank

---- and like a (ii)___ rainfall refilling a dry desert lakebed,

we do know from the first sentence that no consumers buy at a constant pace without pause. always. Her we do have a similitude of this behaviour with the rain in the desert.
We do have also the word refilling which means completely refueled so we need a word that shoes us a constant process like the"buy always" and "refilling" D and E mean NO constant or NOt regular. F yes. F is the second blank

over time it so thoroughly (iii) ____ everyday life that we no longer pause to think about its presence, or indeed what might have once lain beneath the shimmering surface.

the third blank must be in this line of reasoning, because of the desert example and the customers behaviour. Therefore, this "buy thing" pervade and is already in every single corner of our society. This behaviour permeates - it is ubiquitous - in every aspect.

G is the answer

Hope this helps

Shouldn't blank F be "Persistent" and not "Presistent"? Thanks.
