At Tenderloin Pharmaceuticals, 25 percent of the employees take the subway to work. Among those who ride the subway, 42 percent transfer from one subway line to another during their commutes, and the rest do not transfer. What percent of all employees transfer lines?

Assuming that the total number of employees are 100, then 25 take the subway, while 0.42*25 = 10.5 change line. Then, the percentage of those changing line on the total is 10.5/100*100 = 10.5%

Simply multiply those two together; 0.42 * 0.25 = 0.105, or 10.5%.

This works because those who change lines are a subset of those who take the subway to begin with. In other words, if we had 200 people, 50 would be taking the subway (25% of 200); then, since 42% of those 50 change lines, we'd have 21 people changing lines. This also happens to be 10.5% of 200.
