Issue Essay
Aristotle famously wrote, "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." If Ignorance is infact bliss, a person who does not know about a problem does not worry about it. As the prompt suggests, the ordeal of acquiring knowledge comes with the ordeal of it becoming more complex and mysterious in the bargain. In my opinion, I mostly agree to the suggestion as the scales for the most part tilt in the favor of the latter for two reasons.
When a child comes into this world, he is completely ignorant and inexperienced. As he grows up, he observes things around him. Slowly he gets the knowledge about what is good and what is bad for him. It is only when he gains the knowledge of his surroundings that he is capable of being on his own. He comes to know that by putting his hand in a fire, he might get burnt, and by playing with sharp objects he can hurt himself. Here, knowledge is a necessity – one that we cannot ignore for our own growth. But every coin has two sides, and thus due to the acquired knowledge in adults and the lack thereof in children, kids are more free spirited and take more risks. They don’t think of imposter syndrome and do as they please. Thus, without knowing the complexities of certain things can liberate us as well.
History of mankind is testimony to the fact that most of the earlier civilizations worshipped the sun and the moon as they were the only celestial beings as per the astronomical knowledge prevalent in those times. Centuries have gone past, but mankind is still intrigued by the complexities and mysteries of the universe. Man has gained immense knowledge in the subject of astronomy, but our universe and the celestial bodies continue to intrigue and baffle humans. There is no limit to the knowledge that has been acquired on this subject over the last few centuries. However, each new discovery opens new doors to further speculations and theories. Along the way, certain other aspects have indeed become more intelligible than they were before, but this understanding of the universe is nothing as compared to the dark mysteries which have not yet been unraveled by man. Arisen from the knowledge that man has acquired after years of research and study, still astronomy is arcane to us.
However, in the pursuit of acquiring knowledge, one must not lose ground and get lost in the details. Therefore, it would not be incorrect to say that things, by and large, become more obscure and nebulous as one acquires knowledge. However, one cannot refute the fact that there are certain things and phenomena that do become comprehensible as a result of acquiring knowledge, but at times this comprehensibility may be insignificant compared to the complexities that have arisen as a result of the knowledge acquired. Thus, knowing when acquiring more knowledge is a boon or bane is highly important for ourselves.
