Belonging to the category of (i) _______ rather than science: assertions about octopuses that they have been observed unscrewing jar lids from the inside, deliberately squirting water at researchers who annoy them, or slipping out of their tanks after hours to raid a neighboring exhibit for a snack, these claims rest on little more than (ii) _______, repeated and embellished until they hardened into common knowledge among aquarium staff.

Explanation
The sentence contrasts the category with science:
"Belonging to the category of (i) _______ rather than science..."
The claims are said to be:
-based on little more than something,
-repeated and embellished,
-eventually becoming common knowledge.
This strongly describes folklore, stories passed around and elaborated over time, rather than scientifically verified facts. For Blank (ii), the claims "rest on little more than" scattered accounts, which naturally explains how anecdotes can become folklore.
B. conjecture = speculation, but does not capture the idea of stories being repeated and embellished.
C. dogma = authoritative beliefs accepted without question, usually in ideological or religious contexts.
E. rigorous trials and F. peer-reviewed analyses are the opposite of "little more than."
Answer: A,D
