Claim: Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
Reason: The world today is significantly more complex than it was even in the relatively recent past.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
The world has changed significantly in the last few years, especially after science and technology has taken over. The world has changed quickly and has brought revolutionary changes in everything around us including climate, politics, lifestyle, economy, technology and so on. Although situations have changed, patterns in nature and humans often repeat themselves, and I do believe there is a lot to learn from the past.
To start with politics, we know how important it is to elect a good leader, efficient and at the same time a good and just human. We all know the World War 2 cataclysm that shocked and horrified the world. The Nazi propaganda that vilified the Jews is something that still arouses fear in people that how can someone be subjected to such horrendous acts? This has helped us understand how a leader can impact a nation and its people. A leader who understands it is not just about personal wars but about the things that make the world a better place to live in. Also we know that most of the countries have their own nuclear weapons, but do we see any country using it or even claiming to have one? No one has forgotten the Hiroshima Nagasaki chapter, where a nuclear weapon annihilated and destroyed an entire nation, and the effects are still felt today. How Japan bounced back after such a violent upheaval is something for the record books and for the young generations to learn.
Secondly, global warming even today is a serious problem Though the circumstances have changed, the struggles are still the same. Starting with Ice Age, the melt down of ice age caused extinctions of animals and those who could adapt incorporate changes survived and rest is history. Scientists reveal that because of excessive CO2 and other greenhouse gases that are produced due to various factors have a detrimental effect on the environment and if we fail to act and prevent this further it can lead to an extinction of human life on earth. Learning from the ice age would give insights about the catalyst that resulted in a shift in the environmental condition.
Science today has a big impact on medication it has proved its success in extirpating many evil diseases. The eradication of Spanish Flu that took away the life of million people, decades ago, is similar to the Covid 19 condition that we have today. Back then medicines, vaccines were not developed, but researchers have mentioned that people effected with Spanish flu were in isolation for days and some even wore small cloths near their mouth which we now claim as masks, to prevent the spread of infection.
Thus even though times have changed, the innate nature of things around us still remains the same, hence it is always the same struggle and past events helps us to prepare in a better way. So that, even if history repeats itself we do not repeat our mistakes.
