A student visa is required if you wish to enroll in a full-time degree granting program in any country across the globe. Your student visa is issued from the time you begin the course and is valid for a certain period after you graduate depending on which country the visa is issued for.
In the US for example, students can on campus apply for a 12-month extension under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The university can apply for a further extension if your program is STEM designated. In the UK, your visa can be extended for 24-months after graduation. Australia and Canada also allow a two year extension. Whereas, Ireland, Netherlands, Singapore allow a 12-month extension period.
Once you have accepted an admit and paid a seat deposit, the university will issue a formal letter with the program details that need to be submitted for the visa. In the US for example, this document is known as the I-20 whereas in the UK, it is referred to as the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Do bear in mind, each country has a window of time that you can enter the country in before the start of the program. For example, you can enter the United States on your F-1 (student category) visa only 30 days prior to the start date of the course as mentioned on the I-20. Please check this detail before booking your flight or planning to travel the country prior to the start of your program.
