Let's examine some possible case

Case i: It could be the case that ∆ADC is an isosceles triangle, which means ∆ADB and ∆CDB IDENTICAL triangles.

In this case, Quantity A EQUALS Quantity B



Case ii: It could be the case that ∆ADC is NOT an isosceles triangle, and we have something like this:

In this case, Quantity B is GREATER THAN Quantity A


Answer: D

Cannot we use the property that when two angles are equal , the sides opposite to the two angles will also be equal and hence in this case AB will always be equal to BC

No, they are in different triangle here.

Now, if we simply had the little box showing that the angle formed with the base was a right angle, then I'm confident we could say the segments are equal because segments an equal distance away formed by equal size angles should be equal.

Since we don't have that, based on Brent's illustration, we can't make that conclusion are any definite conclusion about the segment sizes.

We have information about ONLY the angle 30° and we can infer that the angle at the bottom is 90° No more than this

without any other information is impossible to calculate the length of any side of the triangle or part of them

D is the answer

Wouldn't the information given make angles B and C both 60 degrees and thus make the triangle equal? Is it possible that the angles are all equal but one side of the triangle is bigger than the other?

It would if angle DBC was 90 degrees. But in the wonderland of GRE tests, just because an angle looks like it's 90 degrees doesn't mean it is 90 degrees.

Geometric figures are not drawn to scale.

Hope this helps clarify things.

the sides are in the same ratio of the angles

Ok let be clear on this. Because I believed you posed a hypothetical question............anyway


We can have the first scenario in which the two angles are 90° and the angles A and C are 60°

In this case the answer is C. AB = BC

But if one side is shorter than the other we know that the two angles A and C are NOT equal. C < A. Therefore AB > BC
