Coral reefs are one of the most fragile, biologically complex, and div [#permalink]

1- B. The 1st paragraph of the passage describes the survival of corals even in nutrient-poor waters. the 2nd paragraph describes the effects of human activities on the coral reef communities. options E is described as the symptom of reef decline. option D is wrong as corals get food by the symbiotic relationship of algae and this part is only the first paragraph and I dont think that this is the primary concern of the passage. option C is part of the 2nd paragraph doesnt encompass the whole meaning of the paragraph. Option B is good as the 2nd paragraph starts with the effect of human activities on coral reefs, the activities which cause damage to reefs, the symptoms of decline etc. option A says the human activities on algae but the passage is concerned about the human activities on coral reefs. So, Option B is correct.

2-A . It is given in the first paragraph that the corals survive in nutrient poor waters (which is described as a paradox). Option E is wrong as there is no comparison with dry land mentioned in the passage. option D is wrong as the destabilization of herbivores is a symptom of decline but not a causal effect of reef growth! option C is also wrong as there is no mentioning of changes in temperature due to human activities in the passage. option B is also wrong as it is not mentioned in the passage regarding the spread of nutrients. So option A is correct as it is mentioned in the first paragraph.

3-A. Growth of filter feeding animals is given as a symptom of reef deterioration. hence option A is correct.

4-E . it is mentioned in 2nd paragraph that various human activities increase the nutrient load in the waters and is responsible for reef deterioration. Hence option E is correct.

5-C. the paradox is that the corals are surviving in a low nutrient environment as mentioned in the first paragraph. hence option C is correct

Thank you for the explanation, but can you please help me to understand which sentence (question Number 5) is talking about the low nutrient environment in the first paragraph
TIA :)
