Meaning of :`"he did not easily concede a point,"

To concede means to admit or agree that something is true after first denying or resisting it.

So, it means that the candidate did not agree when his mistakes were pointed out. He continued to defend his original point(idea) even when it was proven to be wrong.

Meaning of: "and relished the chance to be drawn into confrontation."

It means he enjoyed a good confrontation, in this case, a confrontation of ideas.

No, they are not referring to a sport.

Basically, the sentence fragment after the semicolon explains the word for the blank. It says that he refused to admit his mistakes and enjoyed getting into a confrontation. Therefore, the word choices are pugnacious and doughty.
