You have to divide by the total time. 140/3 = 49.

Davis travels at a constant speed of 40 miles per hour for two hours and then at a constant speed of 60 miles per hour for one hour.

Quantity A
Quantity B
Davis's average speed for the entire trip
45 miles per hour

A)The quantity in Column A is greater.
B)The quantity in Column B is greater.
C)The two quantities are equal.
D)The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

The formula for average speed is total distance divided by total time (NOT taking the average of the two speeds!). We can use the formula s = d/t to find that the distances are 80 and 60. Average speed = (80+60)/3 = 46.667 mph. Therefore Quantity A > Quantity B.
