Despite is a trigger word here. The sentence after comma mentions that some papers gave importance to art forgery despite ... So we know, that we want to have a word that says that forgery is bad or that we need a negative word.

Craven and Covetous though not positive words, are adjectives that describes a quality while reprobate meaning wrong in principles clearly aligns with forgery.

Since the belief is that these authors lack ethics and good sense, they can only be criticized (lambasted) and not praised (extolled)
