Let x = total number of smelt a seal came across
So as per statement we can write:
\((0.5 * 80) + 0.3(x - 80) = 0.4x\)
or \(0.1 x = 16\)
or \(x =160\)
Therefore the seal eat 40% of smelt it came across = \(0.4 * 160 = 64\)
