Few want to believe that Lisa de Giocondo, the woman popularly believed to have been the model for da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, was a(n) _______ person and prefer instead to think that there is an enigma behind the celebrated smile.

Two Answers
dulcet
artless
comely
facile
inscrutable
ingenuous

Most of us perceive Monalisa to be disingenuous who belies her true emotions behind the noticeable smile. We need a word that contradicts this mask nature of the portrait.

From the options, only "ingenuous" and "artless" fit. They both here mean innocent or sincere.

None of the other options taken together can be a pair.

B & E are correct as the sentence require something opposite of enigma by mentioning instead.
