Ok; let’s delve.
The prompt says that Bradley was slowed down by some negative factors that he had to adhere to. Can you now look for some negative element? Obviously revered, construed and broached are not negative factors. The choice now narrows down to supplanted and fettered.
If you don’t know the meaning of the two words, then you have to make an intelligent guess and take a chance and choose between the two. But if you have an idea that supplanting is vaguely related to subordinating or suppressing, then, you may find that Bradley was only subjected to some controls rather than be suppressed. Now you can go in for ‘fettered’; 'fettered' literally means being put in chains like an animal is done or infringing upon one’s freedom figuratively. Do you remember that the slave Africans used to be fettered after their day’s work in Southern US plantations?
Thus, going through the negative, positive or neutral route, and trying to recall some vague connections might help to eliminate a few wrong choices and nudge towards the correct one. All said and done, however, building up one’s vocabulary is the ultimate solution. This is as far as I can suggest.
