Re: Greta’s salary was x thousand dollars per year, then she rec [#permalink]

Just for my better understanding : the question says " y raise or x raise", NOT x percent or y percent raise. The raise maybe in whole figure ( say y=300 dollar raise or y=400 dollar raise), instead of x% or y% raise, is not it? Please help somebody with some explanation. Thanks in advance .

If your salary is 100 and then the increase is 10, then you do have $10 more. But still, it is a 10% increase.

The two things overlap. It is not specified in the stem.

In this particular case, we can hand it as % also.

Hope is clear now.

No, unfortunately it is still not clear. How about we would not assume that there are percents?

Then Greta had $100 000, raise was 50 000, => raise was 50 000;
Annika had $50 000, raise was $100 000 => raise WAS 100 000.

What exactly am I missing? Where is this mysterious thing which is obvious for the rest of us?

I agree with leanyanko
(received a y raise) is different from (received a y% raise)
y raise means a constant number, in this case the answer will be "D"

You are all correct to question the veracity of the official answer.
I have edited the question to show that we are raising the salaries by y and x PERCENT.

Cheers,

This doesn't make sense to me...I thought the answer was D. Please correct me where I am wrong.

If x = 30 and y = 10
x+y% raise = 30 + 10% = 33
y+x% raise = 10 + 30% = 13.

I can also do this for x=200 and y=2
200+2% raise = 202
2 + 200% raise = 6

There are only variables available no numbers whatsoever. Will it be safe to assume numbers ?

Sure you can. Even when you try with different nos the answer will remain the same.

Very Important concept to keep in mind for QC to solve it quickly:
x% of y = y% of x
This question is exactly testing that and the correct answer is C.
