Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
According to the information stated in the passage, after the implementation of the evaluating teaching effectiveness of all the professors of Omega University all the grades of the students increased by 30 percent. Potential employees decided that this dramatic raise is not veracious and the grades of Omega University students are not reliable, thus, according to the passage, graduates from nearby Alpha University are more successful in getting the job. The arguments author uses to prove his position are quite logical, but not inviolable and cogent. Hence, only additional facts will let to make a decision about the plausibility of the consequence mentioned in the end of the passage.
First of all, the grades are a good criterion to select an employer, but not the only one. Good grades don’t denote that company will hire a graduate student. There are a lot of ways to improve attractiveness of the students for the employer: cohesive resume, experience of work, participation in internship, additional courses. Therefore, there are number of possible reasons, why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. For instance, while the Omega University provides their students with a courses teaching them how to composite great resume, collaborates with different companies in order to provide his graduates with internships and jobs, Alpha University is not engaged in such kind of activities and focuses only on professional preparation. In this case the termination of the student evaluation of professors will not lead to desired results.
Secondly, the evaluation system of professor performance seems to be a very popular mean of monitoring. It can be assumed that a lot of universities exploit it, probably the Alpha University is also a user of this system. Thus, author need to give readers additional information regarding absence or presence of similar system in Alpha due to the fact that only in this case it is possible to made conclusion about the role of evaluating professors performance system in the success of graduates on the job market.
The success of graduate students on market is amalgam of many different elements, hence to make a conclusion that system gives opportunity for the students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of their professors is responsible for their hiring additional investigations must be made.
