It is not possible for m and n to be both negative or both positive, because this would make mn > 0, which is not the case. This rules out m < 0 and n < 0, m > 1 and n > 1, and –1 < m < 0 and n < 0. Furthermore, m > 1 and n < –1 is not possible because then the product mn would be less than –1, which is also not the case. Thus m < 1 and n < 1 is the only possibility which could be true.
