If 12x + 2y is 80% of 5y, what is the value of x/y ?
A) 1/6
B) 1/4
C) 2/5
D) 1/2
E) 5/8
GIVEN: 12x + 2y is 80% of 5y
Rewrite as: 12x + 2y = (80/100)(5y)
Evaluate to get: 12x + 2y = 4y
Subtract 2y from both sides of the equation to get: 12x = 2y
Divide both sides by y to get: 12x/y = 2
Divide both sides by 12 to get: x/y = 2/12Simplify: x/y = 1/6
Answer: A

Brent I am unable to understand the highlighted , pls elucidate.
Once we know that 12x = 2y, we must determine the value of x/y
To do so, we must follow the Golden Rule of Equation Solving:
what you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other side. So, to move the y to the left side of the equation, I took 12x = 2y and divided BOTH sides by y to get: 12x/y = 2
To move the 12 to the left side, I took 12x/y = 2 and divided BOTH sides by 12 to get: x/y = 2/12
Does that help?
Cheers,
Brent
