A. − 3

B. − 1

C. 1

D. 3

E. 5

Let's use the elimination method to eliminate the y terms

GIVEN:
4x − 3y = 13
5x + 2y = −1

Take top equation and multiply both sides by 2 to get the EQUIVALENT equation 8x − 6y = 26
Take bottom equation and multiply both sides by 3 to get the EQUIVALENT equation 15x + 6y = −3

ADD the two resulting equations to get: 23x = 23

Solve: x = 1

Answer: C
