If f(x) = x2 - 9, what is the value of f(3)? [#permalink]
1
Whenever I see a rational function, the first thing I do is look at the denominator to know what value of x is not permitted, because it will make the denominator zero, and the value of the function undefined. In this case, since the denominator (x-3), I know that f(3) will make the denominator zero and the function undefined.

Yet the question asks us to find the value of f(3). The answer is undefined or Choice E.

\(f(x) = \frac{ x^2 - 9}{x-3} = \frac{ x^2 - 9}{3-3} = \frac{ x^2 - 9}{0} = undefined.\)
