x^2 + 5x + 12 = 8
x^2 + 5x + 4 = 0
(x+4)(x+1) = 0
x+4 = 0
x = -4
x+1 = 0
x = -1
x could be -4 or - 1. We are told that x < -3, so x has to be -4.
-4 + 2 = -2
Answer choice B.

x+4 = 0

Also, if x < -3, then x + 2 < -1. That eliminates C, D, and E, leaving us with only two choices. I test x + 2 = -2 (so x = -4), and it works, so choice B is the answer. If it didn't work, A would be the answer.
