The board of directors of a certain company needs to select 1 out of 10 candidates for the Director position \& 2 of the 8 candidates for the 2 identical positions of senior management; we need to find the number of ways 3 positions can be filled.
Since a director is to be selected out of 10 candidates \& for the selection of 2 senior management positions there are 8 candidates, the number of ways in which the selection can be made is $\({ }^{10} \mathrm{C}_1 \times{ }^8 \mathrm{C}_2=10 \times 28=280\)
Hence the answer is (C).
