In a recent study, 90 people were surveyed about what type of animal they owned as a pet. Everyone surveyed owned at least one animal. The results are shown in the Venn diagram. What percent of the respondents said they had a dog and a cat but no birds?

There are 90 people in total but elements in the set add upto 75. This can only mean that the remaining 15 are either/or D'C'B' or DCB'. Since we are given that everyone surveyed owned at least one animal this means neither dogs, cats and birds (D'C'B')=0 which means we can say 90–75=15=DCB'. Hence our required percentage is 15/90*100≈17%.
