In an acoustics class, 120 students are male and 100 students are female. 25% of the male students and 20% of the female students are engineering students. 20% of the male engineering students and 25% of the female engineering students passed the final exam. What percentage of engineering students passed the exam?

We can calculate that 25% of 120 is 30 and 20% of 100 is 20.
Hence we have 30 male engineers and 20 female engineers. The 20% of 30 is 6 and the 25% of 20 is 5. Therefore we have 11 total students of engineering who passed the exam out of a total number of engineering students which is 20 + 30 = 50.
So our answer is 11/50 = 0.22 (22%). Answer is D.
