If the perimeter of SQUARE ABCD is 32, . . .
. . . then each side must have length 8
If the area of ΔADE is 12, we can let the base have length x
Area of triangle = (base)(height)/2
So, we can write: 12 = (x)(8)/2
Solve to get: x = 3
Now that we know that side DE has length 3, . . .
. . . we can see that side EC must have length 5
Answer: 5
