"Claim: We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from those whose views contradict our own.
Reason: Disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
Learning is a process that widens the horizon of an individual. Learning happens when one thinks and makes an attempt to increase his or her existing knowledge. Therefore, curiosity is the quintessential basis for learning. In my opinion, we can learn from any kind of people, be it the ones who share the same or different views compared to us. Both these kinds of people kindle our curiosity to think beyond our existing knowledge. With people who have different perspectives when compared to us , we may have disagreements in aligning with a conclusion. Though this disagreement might cause stress and tension among people , it does not hinder the process of learning . In fact, the disagreements hastens the process of learning by making us think better and find answers to the unanswered questions.
Most of us are exposed to situations where we learn from people who contradict our views. One common example is the school. In school , teacher often asks the students of a class to form two opposing groups and debate about a particular issue. Students throw fitting points at each other and in the end the teacher discusses the different ideas generated from the discussion. This tested method of learning involves a lot of disagreements but it does not cause any stress among students. It only eases the process of learning. This method of learning is more effective than simple narration of the topic by the teacher.
Moreover, people having views that contradict our own help us identify our mistakes. They serve as a catalyst to remove the limitation in our learning process and bring out the best in us. A relevant example that supports this claim is the drafting of the constitution of the largest democracy of the world. The Indian constitution is the largest constitution in the world. It was drafted after discussing for almost three years. The framers of the constitution read the major constitutions of the world and discussed the pros and cons of many important features. After many disagreements , the existing version was finally drafted and adopted by the country. I believe that these disagreements helped bring out the best version of the document. Without these discussions and disagreements I am sure that such a high quality material is difficult to be created.
However, there is a downside to my reasoning. There may be difference of opinion among people that lead to stress and tension. Such tension may prevent them from arriving at the conclusion. In such cases, the learning process might be inhibited. For instance, when the employees in an office meeting do not agree with each other even after enough deliberation about an issue , it might stall the progress of the company.
In conclusion , I feel that we can learn more from people whose views contradict our own, provided that we are open to disagreements. This will help us to avoid stagnation in our knowledge. All that matters the most is our willingness to agree to disagree.
