peccadillo - means some offence - can be a cause

sophistry - this is tough one for me - greek root: sophists = wise people - can be a cause
peccadillo vs sophistry - peccadillo is like a mistake but sophistry is related to the profession of lawyers or people who argue. Notice that we need something related to the word debater.
Hence, sophistry is the best fit.
