Hi!
Although I did get this one wrong, I'll try explaining.
lyrical and charming- This is the clue in the first sentence. So according to the sentence we need something opposite like something not very charming or dull-grim fits the bill.
The sentence then continues and does not change its direction or start another topic so for the second blank as well we need something similar to dull, inconvenient is the word as the other two are out of context.
As for the third blank the author says the historians did so only to so we need something negative they basically did not support the view, refute fits.
