Well , the above is the official explanation.

Now, this is a sentence with , I agree with, not so many clues about

However, we have to intend the meaning of the sentence and get a sense to it

Motivated chiefly by a need for _____________, the CEO announced a charitable program through which the company would donate an equal item to charity for each item purchased at full price.

The key is just at the beginning

The rest of the sentence is just filler even though is important

The CEO would donate an item for every item purchased. So fa so good.

However, we do have Motivated chiefly by a need. As soon as I read this, my mind would synchronize on the following: umhhh something is going suspicious here.

Why I gift an additional piece if you buy another item for a FULL price. Notice I will donate an item NOT for every kind of purchase ORRR for a certain amount of spending in my store: I spend 30 bucks and I will donate to the charity.

In the latter case, I should be moved by a sense of gratitude or to help people.

In the case of the sentence, my feeling is that I do that for opportunity or because is convenient for my store. I.E. to attract customers via the charity donation.

That is why the prepositional phrase at the beginning

because their real intention was opportunity. I do not wanna say to be nasty but.............

A. altruism

no. It is exactly the contrary we are looking for

B. redemption
no means = good

C. exposure

yes attract customers

D. gratitude
no. you are not good. you are nasty

E. faith

no. you are not a saint

F. publicity

yes attract customers

I hope now is more clear

That's how Sentence Equivalence works. We need to choose two words that produce sentences of similar meanings. The two words will usually be synonyms or near synonyms.
