Since it says "could" I think we can vary the number of people who are not in either course. So assuming all people are in some class, the minimum intersection becomes 320+175 - 420 = 45. Then max overlap can be 175 (meaning a total of 320 people who took atleast one course), and 130 who took neither. C,D looks right with this logic.

if we do have a total of 420 students
320 in math
and
175 in philosophy
The students enrolled in both are 45
I do not see any possible way to have C,D, and E as answers
which is the source of this question ?
