Often considered by his peers to be a purveyor of__________, Simmons h [#permalink]

If Simmons’s students think he is sincere and profound, and his colleagues are in contrast to those students, it would make sense that they think his work is claptrap (trash).

Why not esoteric?

The clues here are:
Peers-->?
Students--> Sincerity & profundity

So I know this is sentence does the word contrast and thus, simmons students and peers thought in a different direction i.e. his peers thought his writing to be not sincere or found is superficial.

Only B fits. Other options are either out of scope or not appropriate to the sentence.

Hope this helps!

If its esoteric, Students wont understand it. and his colleagues would have held him in high esteem.

How I approached this question:
Step 1)
See if the sentence is a support or contrast. we can tell that it's a contrast as the sentence contains "in contrast"
Step 2)
Look what idea is it contrasting. Here, the idea that students often admired and praised Simmons' writing is contrasted. it is said that Simmons' colleagues' thought contrasted that of his student's
Step 3)
If students thought that Simmons is an amazing writer, his colleagues must've contrasted the thought by saying that 'Simmons' writing sucks" (metaphorically).
Step 4)
The only word that matches that would be ---- B) Claptrap

Hope this helps.
