It is given that 9 friends contributed an integer amount between $15 and $24, inclusive, in charity.
The median amount given by them was $20.
We know median amount, i.e. we know 5th term is 20$. (When the terms are arranged in ascending order, central value is median.)
To calculate average, we need to know all the terms. We know the 5th i.e. central term only.
Consider following cases, Let the contributions are
Set 1: To find minimum possible value of mean, let’s keep all the values as minimum.
15$, 15$, 15$, 15$, 20$, 20$, 20$, 20$, 20$
For this set, mean is 17.77.
Set 2: To find maximum possible value of mean, let’s keep all the values as maximum.
$20, $20, $20, $20, $20, $24, $24, $24, $24
For this set, mean is 21.77.
So, Quantity A could be greater, equal or smaller than Quantity B.
Hence, we cannot compare both quantities.
