Argument: Some people believe that corporations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of the societies and environments in which they operate. Others believe that the only responsibility of corporations, provided they operate within the law, is to make as much money as possible.
Response:
Some may say that the quintessential motive of an organisation is to make profits and expand further. However, I believe that making profits should not be the primary goal of an organisation; rather, they should first promote the well-being of society and the environment.
Any development, whether it be in organisations in the tech industry, the health care industry, or the hospitality industry, their main motive should be enhancement in the direction of social well-being. The profits would finally not matter if the cost was to harm the environment in any way, which in turn would also cause problems for society. ‘Smart Water’ is an example of a well-known organisation that is very responsible regarding the well-being of society and the environment in which they operate. Their main focus is to sell bottled water using environmentally friendly materials with minimal use of preservatives. The profits made by the organisation are mostly donated to charitable organisations.
The main responsibility of an organisation is always to make society a better place. One of the biggest problems that we face is pollution in all its forms. Organisations that focus more on profitability usually neglect the harm that they cause to the environment. A trillion-dollar organisation Apple is one of the biggest promoters of environmentally friendly products. Their main goal is to reduce the carbon footprint that their devices produce and to finally become a green organisation. In spite of their focus being more oriented towards making environmentally friendly products, they generate more revenue than any other company in their domain. Which implies that profits made are byproducts of a fundamentally responsible organisation.
It doesn’t always imply that if an organisation is working within the boundaries stated by the law, it is concerned about the well-being of society. Organisations that promote social causes are more appreciated by consumers, who prefer to use their products and services.Rolex is one of the most critically acclaimed watch manufacturing organisations that donates 100 percent of its revenue towards charity and the well-being of society. In spite of being a charitable organisation, they have never made less profits; they are one of the best luxury watch manufacturers. This ramifies that organisations should be more responsible regarding society and the environment; profits would flow hand in hand.
In conclusion, because of the aforementioned reasons, I believe that organisations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of societies and environments.
