Re: Shorter GRE - How score is calculated & the new exam pattern [#permalink]

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) has recently undergone changes in 2023, including a shorter exam format. Let's dive into how the score is calculated and the new exam pattern:

Shorter GRE Exam Format 2023

The revised GRE format aims to make the test-taking experience more efficient. The 2023 GRE exam consists of three main sections:

1. Verbal Reasoning: This section assesses your ability to understand written material, evaluate arguments, and synthesize information. In the new format, you will encounter two sets of questions.

2. Quantitative Reasoning: This section evaluates your problem-solving and quantitative skills. It also includes two sets of questions.

3. Analytical Writing: The writing section remains a crucial part of the GRE. It involves two tasks: analyzing an issue and analyzing an argument.

Scoring in the GRE

The scoring system for the GRE remains consistent in 2023. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a scale of 130 to 170 in one-point increments. The maximum total score achievable on the GRE is 340. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6 in half-point increments.

Your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores are combined to form the total GRE score, with each section contributing equally.

How the New Format Impacts Test-Takers

The shorter GRE format is designed to save test-takers time while still effectively assessing their skills and knowledge. The reduction in testing time is generally seen as a positive development.

For test-takers preparing for the GRE in this new format, it's crucial to adapt their study strategies to the revised structure. Carcass Does short passage contains Argument(CR) based questions also or all questions are Inference and Primary purpose based only?

First here my guide to RC https://gre.myprepclub.com/forum/shorte ... 33410.html

Based on what we are dealing with right now with the new GRE I did not hear we have CR or passage paragraph argument. But because I also have the mentor course and it reflects the latest GRE questions, my assumption is that you still might see a CR during the exam. Of course, nothing fancy like for example on the gMAT but just the major four types: weaken, strengthen, assumption, and inference /conclusion

As for RC, regardless medium or long, you will have the main idea and the rest of the questions. Turns out, they basically are of two types: main idea and inference questions.

See my guide above.
