To calculate the diagonal of a rectangular solid, you can simply take the sum of the squares of the length, width, and height, and take the square root. (This is the mathematical equivalent of using the Pythagorean theorem twice in succession.) For this problem, you need only report the square of the length, so you do not need to find the square root of the sum of the squared sides: \((xy)^2 = 11^2 + 7^2 + 8^2 = 121 + 49 + 64 = 234\)
