That the erosion (wearing away of rocks and other deposits on the earth's surface) is substantial is clear from the phrase "large amounts of lost sediment:' To escalate means to intensify or accelerate, and thus A is the correct answer.
D, E, and F could all be possibilities for Blank (ii), but the only option that would plausibly result in faster erosion is smaller-grained. The final blank requires some inference. Given the information we have that beach nourishment causes fast erosion, accelerated and never-ending are appropriate descriptions of the cycle of erosion and replacement. Ineffective is possible, but not as good a fit as the other two options. We understand the process, so it is not inexplicable, and we are given no reason to believe it is unhygienic. It is safe to assume that having to replace the sand again and again is expensive, so G is the best choice.
