I have problem understanding when to ADD rations and when to multiply or use division to solve the ratio problem. how to know when to use what.

When divided on above ratio, the amount is broken into 12 equal parts, 1st person get 1/12th, 2nd get 2/12th, 3rd get 4/12th and 4th person get 5/12th.

So 1st person get 1/12th of 120000 which is 10000
5th erson gets highest share as he takes 5 out of 12 parts = 5/12*120000 = 50000

Difference between highest and lowest = 50K-10K =40000

Hence both are equal.

Four friends win $120,000 in the lottery, and they divided the winnings in a 1:2:4:5 ratio

Quantity A	Quantity B
The difference between the greatest and least share	$40,000

A The quantity in Column A is greater
B The quantity in Column B is greater
C The two quantities are equal
D The relationship cannot be determined from the information given

We can write as,

x + 2x +3x + 4x +5x =120,000

or x = 10,000

SO the price money is divided as : 10,000 : 20,000 : 40,000 : 50,000

Quantity A:- difference between the greatest and least share = 50,000 -10,000 =40,000

Hence option C

when the ratios are added they become 12 i.e 5+4+2+1

lowest share is 1/12 * 120000 = 10000
highest share is 5/12 * 120000 = 50000

there difference is 50000-10000 = 40000

can i get the explanaton

x : 2x :4x : 5x = (1+2+4+5)x = 12x
12x = 120,000
x = 10,000. .: Least share (x)= 10,000
Greatest share(5x)=50,000
(50,000-10,000)= 40,000
Hence quantity A = Quantity B
