This was quite an easy one, just look at the ; beyond which the author has explaied that how his OPTIMISM which is a one of the 3 clues in this sentence which inclued 1.murcurail, 2; 3 is ,

the blanks calls for his mercurial nature morose and dour.

We need to find opposite words of Optimism.Morose and dour (meaning gloomy) are the perfect match.
